Show Notes:

  • Koran is a family man.
  • He has a dog named Toto after the Wizard of Oz.
  • Koran is originally from St. Louis but has since relocated to Phoenix.
  • He had thought he had the perfect life with a big brother that acted as his father.
    • That all changed when he woke up one day to find out that he lost his brother to gun violence.
    • This caused him to go from getting As and Bs in school to getting Ds and Fs.
    • He had a really hard time with the loss of his brother.
    • He didn’t even have the support of his teachers (they told him he would not amount to anything in life.)
  • The habit that has led to his success has been positive self-talk.
    • It has to be a habit for you.
    • The world is just looking for someone to validate them.
    • The words that you speak to yourself are much more powerful than what anyone else says to you.
  • Koran started out as a rapper.
    • That resulted in him learning how to influence young people through the art of hip-hop.
    • This also made him a role model to many different young people.
  • Ended up getting a record deal with Def Jam Records.
    • His group spent all of their money right away and ended up losing his record deal.
  • Koran’s framework is Rock, Paper, Scissors
    • This is a decision-making model.
    • Do you have your rock?
      • Is this something that you truly believe in?
    • Do you have your paper?
      • Does this line up with what you wrote down on paper?
    • Do you have your scissors?
      • If this does not line up with what you wrote you need to cut it away.
  • His framework allows you to assess where you had a mistake.
  • Playing the game is the law of engagement.
  • The number one thing when giving a talk is not about the information but being a master of engagement.
  • He started his public speaking career talking to 4th and 5th graders. Koran created the philosophy on a whim with the game that he would play to keep the kids engaged in his talk.  Somehow he can find the kid that really needs his message the most. He is very vulnerable with the audience which causes the group to open up. The motivational talks for the students give him the energy and enthusiasm in other talks. He helps to bring morale back to teams. If you make work a fun environment then you will have happier employees. You have to make sure that people are personally engaged in your company.  To increase belief you need to have your:
    • Rock:
      • Filter the information that you are taking in
      • Are these people the same people that I have the same beliefs as?
    • Paper:
      • Write your goals down every single day
      • Write it again and again
    • Scissors:
      • You have to learn the word “NO”
      • Be a master of scissors
