Show Notes:

  • Thom says that he is really fortunate.
  • He used to work in sales and marketing and would always see other people and think, “They have a better job than I do.”
    • He took a chance to do what he loved and put his all into it and succeeded.
  • Thom talks about the “high middle” which is when it looks like we’ve reached success from the outside but there is more potential and we could be doing more.
    • Our concepts of potential and success are constantly moving outwards as we grow in potential and achieve more.
  • A habit that has led to success in Thom’s life is fairly new, but he does goal setting of six things that he wants to change.
    • Every morning he writes in his notebook and it helps him be more action-oriented.
    • It helps with making him follow through with his actions every day.
  • The difference between a Speaker and an EmCee is that the emcee is never off. He/she is the host of the event and must keep everything running smoothly whereas a speaker shows up, speaks, and leaves.
    • An EmCee must have the personality to keep the event moving and weave content together.
  • At one conference where Thom was the EmCee, there was a gamified app to give people points for sharing on social media the stuff they were doing at the conference. A tech person wrote code to send out a tweet every 9 seconds to earn points.
    • The hosts of the conference felt this guy cheated and they didn’t want him to win, so they came to Thom asking for help. Later when they were presenting the award, Thom told the audience about this guy and made the situation funny. He turned the guy into an icon and a folk hero so that he and the crowd wouldn’t be upset about not winning.
  • Thom is the host of the podcast Cool Things Entrepreneurs Do. He has interviewed over 350 people about how and what they do to get where they are.
  • What makes an entrepreneur?
    • An entrepreneur works past their fears. They do. Potential isn’t a solution, you have to take action.
  • At one event, Thom asked people if they felt social media has helped them have more close friends, and the majority said no. He then asked if they feel that it’s easier to market their business, and again the majority said no.
  • People do business with people they know.
    • There is a difference between knowing someone and knowing of someone.
  • Building relationships is critical.
  • Thom says that trust and likability are more important now than ever.
  • How does one reach more potential? Do stuff in addition.
  • Thom wrote his first book 15 years ago.
    • People approached him wanting him to add different perspectives and experiences, and so he gave them license to create a spin-off of his book for the topic they wanted to talk about.
      • One for women, one for graduates, etc.
  • We will never reach our perception of our maximum potential.
    • There is a gap between potential and results.
    • Ideas of your potential will shift out as you accomplish more.
    • Bosses want to build a bridge and drive a bus across a gap, but it is more efficient to build scaffolding so that people can move across at their own rate.
      • You can’t build scaffolding by yourself.
  • What’s your passion? What’s your plan? Who are the people?
  • Figure out how to deal with the “Paradox of Potential.”
  • Thom encourages the listeners to find other good podcasts and widen their sphere of listening.
    • The biggest way to show your love for a podcast and help it grow is to tell all of your friends about it.
