Ryan Carr

Ryan’s purpose is to live with passion, presence, and optimism, and to positively impact people to maximize their potential so that we can all create and live the life we love!  

He currently works as the Sport Performance Supervisor at Barton Health in South Lake Tahoe.  Prior to Barton, Ryan was a performance and strength & conditioning coach at Princeton University, Seton Hall University, Iona College, and the University of Hartford.

Carr is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology, earned his master’s degree in Sport Psychology, and is currently pursuing a Doctorate degree in Sport and Performance Psychology focusing on Positive Leadership Administration.

  • Ryan’s biggest habit is exercising most days and waking up early.
    • Ryan’s background in fitness and physical health has been important for mental health and mental well being.
  • There are a lot of similarities between athletes and high performers.
  • Athletes who are successful have fun. They implement joy into their routine.
  • You can have high performance by having a routine.
    • How you view a challenge will either increase your stress or help you manage it.
  • You can overcome obstacles by:
    • Looking in the mirror and taking ownership.
      • Pointing fingers doesn’t help you.
    • Having a ritual.
  • Mental performance is the art of performing at your best when you need it most and doing that consistently.
  • You’re going to do much better after taking a 10-minute break after working for around 45 minutes.
  • Ryan always starts meetings by asking:
    • What time is it?
      • It’s now.
    • Where are we?
      • We’re here.
  • Sneak in time that lets you reflect throughout your day.
  • Don’t try to block out distractions. Acknowledge them without judgment and then move on.
  • On Sundays, Ryan reviews his goals.
    • Ryan writes out everything that’s important to him and puts it into his weekly calendar.
  • Choose one big thing to do every day and get that knocked out.
  • It’s about people, products, and paper.
    • You have to start with people because if they’re not motivated, nothing else matters.
  • In every situation, you have a choice.
    • How are you going to view it?
  • Start small. Start by taking care of yourself.

  1. Share with us how you believe your mindset affects your life? It all starts with intention. Anything you’re going to start with, have intention of what you’re doing.
  2. What do you do daily to bring Energy into your life? Switch your viewpoint instead of worrying about being 100%. Get 100% out of your 80%.
  3. Share the number one connection that has made the biggest impact on your life? His connection with his family has made the biggest impact on his life.
  4. What advice has Influenced you the most in your life? Excuses are the nails in the house of failure.
  5. Recommend a book and share why you love it? The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
  6. Define in one sentence or less, what legacy you want to leave on the world? He wants to leave people feeling like they can maximize their potential and have fun during that process.
