How To Achieve Any Goal

Why do successful people achieve their goals and those who do not set goals fail? That is the question I pose to you today. Why? I believe that goals are the ingredient that separates those who are successful and those who are not. Let me share with you how you can achieve any goal by using this method.

Celestine Chua, Founder of Personal Excellence tells us: “Without goals, you subject yourself to the natural, default set of actions that keep you feeling safe & comfortable every day. But this familiarity is the nemesis of growth. It prevents you from growing. It does not enable you to become the best person you can be. It denies you from tapping into all the potential inside of you.”

This is the key to living up to your full potential! This is how you get out of your comfort zone & grow. How you become the best you can be! 

Approximately 80% of people never set goals for themselves. Of the 20% of the population that does set goals, roughly 70% fail to achieve them.

I remember back in the fall of 1998 I set a goal that I wanted to own the building for our main headquarters when I was in the wireless industry. I wrote this goal down and then created the reason why this was important to me. I then broke down the action steps I needed to take to achieve the goal within the next 3 years. I started in 1999 following through on my action steps: like talking to commercial realtors.  

Do you know what happened?  

This goal was accomplished within one year of setting the goal. We moved into our new location in October of 1999. Why? Because I followed the process I am going to share with you today.

Let’s start with the first key…

Visualize Achieving Your Goals- Create a detailed mental image of the desired outcome. I use a process called Forward Visioning – Which is the ability to look back and visualize how your goal will look after you have successfully completed it.

Write your Goals Down- Those who write down their goals accomplish significantly more. You are 42% more likely to achieve your goals just by writing them down. Telling a friend increases this rate to 78%.

The secret to accomplishing what matters most to you is committing your goals to writing because it brings:

  • Clarity- allows you to constantly view them & become specific
  • Motivation- you see progress or the lack of progress
  • Focus- determine opportunities which are in alignment with your goals
  • Power- gives you the power to become an overcomer
  • Achievement- recognize & celebrate progress towards your goals

Make SMART Goals- Make sure your goals are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, & timely.

Ask Why- What is the driving force/motivating factor for the goals?

Action Steps- What actions steps will you need to take to reach your goals?

Habits/Behaviors- Commit to the changes you will need to make to reach your goals. 

Reward- Recognize even the smallest achievements that are moving you towards your goal.

I coined a quote a few years ago about goals it goes like this:

“Goals – it’s like having your headlights on because you know where you are going.”
